Kiwifruit Pollination

Pollination: The transfer of pollen from the anthers of a flower to the stigma of the same flower or of another flower.

Pollination is a prerequisite for fertilisation: the fusion of nuclei from the pollen grain with nuclei in the ovule.  Fertilization allows the flower to develop seeds.

Some flowers will develop seeds as a result of self-pollination, when pollen and pistil are from the same plant, often (but not always) from the same flower.    Other plants require cross-pollination: pollen and pistil must be from different plants as with Kiwifruit.

Most plants need help moving pollen from one flower to the pistil of another.  Wind moves the pollen for some plants such as grasses like corn.  Animal pollinators move pollen for many other flowering plants.

The success rate of bees to pollinate the Green & Gold Kiwifruit can vary somewhat depending on seasons, bee population, a natural phenomenon occurring or disease. It can all have an impact on a successful crop and its production.

These days optimisation of a successful production is paramount to the grower and this is where All Terrain Pollination and their application systems have proven time and time again to assist in successful pollination of Kiwifruit crops.

The pollination window is very tight. For Gold Kiw2ifruit 2-3 days optimum female flower viability. For Green Kiwifruit 8-9 days.
